Fripp/Eno - Evening Star

What a gorgeous record! It's much calmer than the first Fripp/Eno-collaboration No Pussyfooting, in fact it sounds much more eno-ish than fripp-ish to my ears. One track, Wind On Wind, is actually Eno solo and an basically a condensed version of the title track of Discreet Music (as son of icongneato kindly pointed out in the comments). The overall mood is languid and meditative, dissonance is for the most part kept to a minimum until the final 30 minute track An Index Of Metals. But even there the noise and guitar distortions have a rather calming and blissful effect.

Another BitTorrent find, so thanks a ton to the original uploader calling him/herself (?) resistir!

    Hello muse, thought you'd be interested in this one. Let me know if you like it, I think it's great.

    I'm actually not that familiar with Fripp, just know some King Crimson albums and bits and pieces of his solo work. I found some of it very good and some a bit too prog rock for my taste. But it'll definitely interesting too hear more and give him a closer inspection. Take care!

    Yes indeed, this is an all-time classic. I just thought you'd might like to know that Wind on Wind is, as you say, from Eno's album Discreet Music, but it is in fact a condensed version of the title track 'Discreet Music', which fills the entire first side of the album. Side two is Eno reworking Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, using members of the Cockpit Ensemble, as he filters the music through his tape time-delay system. If you like Wind on Wind you'll probably love Discreet Music.

    I would also recommend Fripp's Soundscape series, which is more or less a follow up to his ambient work with Eno.

    hi, thanks a lot for that information. Discreet Music is in fact one of the classic Eno albums I haven't listened to yet. I just found the information on the net (and obviously got it a little mixed up). Those Fripp records sound very intruiging, seems like I have to check them out. Cheers!

    Fripp and Eno have a realtively new album out called 'The Equatorial Stars' (2005). It's nothing like 'Evening Star', but awesomely beautiful in its own way. However I have to admit that 'Evening Star' has always had a special place in my heart. I've gone through two vinyl copies. I hope the CD will last longer!
    'No Pussyfooting' by F and E is also an interesting piece of music, but much heavier (IMHO). Whereas 'Evening Star' is like mushroom music, 'No Pussyfooting' is more like acid.

    I could listen to this record all day long at the moment. It's just so incredibly delicate and richly textured. Please do post that Fripp record! If it's anything similiar to Evening Star, I'm really looking forward to it. Btw, is my understanding correct that Frippertronics basically refers to a method of looping in real time by using to tape recorders?

    I like that mushroom-acid comparison. I recently bought the re-issue of No Pussyfooting and your metaphor is really spot on. No Pussyfooting is also great in its way, especially Heavenly Music Corporation, but at the moment I prefer Evening Star.

    Wow, thanks a lot for those links. Guess I know all the "canonic" albums by now, but there's a lot of stuff I don't know yet. Definitely have to dl some of the collaborations, esp. with Moebius and Roedelius (I love the Cluster & Eno album and Eno's work with Harmonia). Very keen to hear the Fripp record too. Cheers!
